Across the Bay Area, voters signaled a move away from progressive politics. A progressive mayor and DA were recalled in Oakland. A Levi’s heir was elected as San Francisco’s new mayor. The Bay Area rejected efforts to expand rent control and supported increasing criminal penalties for theft and certain drug crimes. 1:05.3	For many years, let's call it during this century, there have been a couple of different factions in Bay Area politics.
1:11.4	On the one hand, there was a group known as the moderates, who were usually fairly
1:15.1	conventional Democrats and encouraged real estate development, for example. Then there were
1:19.8	the progressives who were quite left of center and willing to entertain quite different
1:23.9	notions about the role of a city government. Well, in recent years, progressives have sustained some heavy electoral losses.
