0:14.2	It's an annual award where you're nominated by students then vetted by the organization
0:19.0	giving the award and tada the list appears.
0:23.2	I was so touched and honored to be recognized alongside colleagues I respected and admired.
0:29.1	It felt really good.
0:31.3	It was in my early years of being a professor so this accolade made it feel like all the
0:36.2	hard work had paid off.
0:38.6	But then I got a call from my school's PR saying that I had been removed from the list.
0:46.8	At the time, students could post comments on the recognition site and a couple of students
0:51.4	posted some, let's say, not so flattering things about me.
0:56.4	And the organization decided I no longer deserve the recognition.
1:02.0	I was livid.
1:04.2	I mean utterly upset, heartbroken, and to this day, the thought of it brings tears to my
1:09.6	eyes.
1:10.6	And I'm telling you about this experience to point out how powerful negativity online
1:15.8	can be even when it may just be a couple of angry people saying unverified things.
1:23.3	And I am by no means a perfect professor.
1:26.2	But I think it's messed up that for people who have some type of public profile, just
1:30.7	doing our jobs makes us vulnerable to online trolls, naysayers, critics, whatever you
1:36.0	want to call them.
