When you've grown up in a family that trades ghost stories the way other families pass down recipes,

you learn early that the world isn't

as empty as it looks. That was the case for the young woman whose story I'm about to tell you.

Now, 21, she has spent most of her life moving from place to place,

but the longest stretch has been in a narrow three-bedroom townhouse where the real

T-shape. At the short end, above the staircase, sits her mother's room. At the far end, side-by-side,

like twin sentries, are the bedrooms she shares with her sister. The top of the staircase has
