Summary

Formula 1 races seem to have everything – the pomp of an A-list party, exotic locations, excited fans, and global superstars on the grid. So what’s missing from this scene? Women behind the wheel. Formula 1 hasn’t had a female driver qualify for a race in almost 50 years and as women’s sports continues to make great strides, the world of elite racing seems to be falling behind. Today, ESPN’s Alyssa Roenigk brings the story of two drivers working together to break barriers in the world of motorsports one race at a time. For more on this story, watch Roenigk in a new documentary that spotlights the women breaking barriers in motorsports for the Emmy-winning "In Real Life" series, premiering Sunday, June 2 at 8 p.m. Eastern, 7p.m. Central on Scripps News. Okay, Alyssa Ronic, how many Formula One races have you been to?

0:04.0

Not as many as I would have liked to have been to, but I've been to a few.

0:06.9

I will say my favorite Formula One race was many years ago, was in Monza, which is right outside

0:10.9

of Milan, Italy, and it was an absolutely incredible experience.

0:17.0

0:36.4

tell you how many times I was offered a glass of champagne at that race but

0:40.6

the pageantry around Formula One racing is really, really incredible.

0:45.0

Those cars are like nothing I'd ever experience.

0:48.0

It's for sure the pinnacle of open wheel racing.

0:51.0

And of course now we see stateside, there's been a lot more attention

0:55.2

especially for the Formula One racing in Miami which you know to me looks sort of

1:00.8

like like the Kentucky Derby with a lot of linen and like cars and

1:05.4

cocktails and things like that could you just sort of paint a picture of what the

1:09.3

vibes are in Miami during these races. You know that race in Miami, it draws such an A-list crowd

1:15.7

from Hollywood, from sports.

1:17.8

The moment is nearly here

1:20.4

and the Miami Grand Prix is underway.

1:23.7

Paul Staff for Charlotte Claire, through goes Carlos.

1:26.5

And especially this year,

1:29.8

it was also the first time that the Formula One Academy was racing alongside the F1 race.

1:36.0

There were two races with the F1 Academy, which is a series for women,
