Welcome to the Black Girl Burnout podcast. Kelly here. And today I have a question for you. Have you ever bought something or signed up for something or even said yes to something? And then immediately felt nothing. Nothing. No relief. no joy, just the urge to do it again. So you might find

yourself checking the bank account again. If you're like me, you're scrolling Zillow listings

or luxury TikTok one more time and you're opening up another tab to research the next thing.

But I want to let you in on a little secret.

That's not a shopping problem or a discipline problem.

It's actually a nervous system problem.

And today we're going to talk about why that is.

Now last week, I talked about how safety is in a number, and I hopefully made the case for why being booked and busy, buying bags and doubling down on beauty isn't going to save you.

Because you cannot create safety with symbols.

So your body, the bag, the bank account, the hustle, they won't make you feel safe.

And if they do, they have short-term benefits.

So if we know the pattern that we want to disrupt is constantly seeking these symbols of safety. Today I want to talk about something

deeper. I want to explain a little bit about why the chase feels so addicting, that it's almost compulsive.

Just because you know something isn't going to save you doesn't mean you automatically stop chasing it.

That's not weakness.

It's actually the way your body is wired.

So indulge me for a few seconds as I kind of explain what is actually going on inside of

your body when you are doom scrolling, compulsively buying, recalculating your profit numbers

and to the point that you over extend yourself.

The first thing you need to understand is that our bodies kind of work in patterns and loops.

So one of the things that's happening when we are like compulsive or addicted to doing certain things is sometimes it's a threat response loop.
