and yet the most disturbing. People send me countless stories about the ones, about missing people and

strange entities that should not exist,

and far too many of them have one thing in common, the way the woods goes silent.

This story, sent to me by an anonymous listener, entitled The One Rule of the Woods You Must Never Break, states that there is a very

specific reason why the forest suddenly goes quiet, and why you should leave like your life

depends on it when it does. Because if the woods go silent, you have ten minutes.

The rule came from Earl Pershing,

who retired two years before the pandemic and died of it in April 2020.

He was alone in a care home in Bozeman, while his family watched

through a window. His daughter posted about it on the memorial page that the Forest Service put together,

and I read it on my phone in a motel room in West Yellowstone the night before I went back into the

field for the first time that spring.

The room reeked of bleach, and the heater knocked against the wall in an a rhythmic pattern

that made sleeping a struggle.

Earl had trained me when I started the job in 2014.

He was the one who told me about the silence.

We were servicing a monitoring station in the thoroughfare, 25 miles from the nearest road.
