Summary

What happens when the professionals you trust to help your child’s OCD, actually make things worse?

Too many parents of kids with OCD are told to “reassure them,” “avoid the triggers,” or “help them relax.” Even well-meaning therapists often miss the mark — treating OCD like general anxiety or skipping ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) altogether.

In this episode, I’m breaking down why OCD is so often misunderstood in therapy, how to tell if your child’s therapist truly understands OCD, and the red flags that signal it’s time to look elsewhere. You’ll learn what evidence-based treatment should look like — and how to advocate for the help your child really needs.

Here's your host, Child Therapist, Natasha Daniels. Well, hello there,

0:23.4

and welcome to another episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast. Today, I want to talk to you

0:28.8

about something that is so important that this may be the most important episode that I ever do.

0:35.1

So I'm glad you're listening to it because so often OCD is

0:40.3

misunderstood not only by your friends and your family, but professionals get it wrong a lot of the

0:47.9

time. And hopefully as time progresses, this will change. But OCD is not well taught in graduate programs.

0:58.6

Therapists are not leaving graduate school educated in how to assess, treat, evaluate,

1:05.3

and do ERP for people with OCD.

1:08.4

Even though ERP exposure response prevention, a type of CBT, cognitive

1:14.5

behavioral therapy, is the first line therapy approach for OCD. And so you as the parent have to know

1:23.1

when professionals are getting it wrong. And that puts us in the driver's seat and adds a little

1:29.5

pressure. But hopefully by the end of this episode, you'll be armed and dangerous because you'll

1:35.2

know enough to know when they don't. And that's my ultimate goal is for you to get into the right

1:40.9

hands to get the right treatment so that your child can get the right help

1:44.7

and have long-term success. They're not going to do that with the wrong therapist. In fact,

1:49.8

it can make it a whole lot worse. All right. Before we dive in, though, I do want to thank NoCD,

1:55.4

ironically, who's sponsoring this episode. They don't get to pick my topics. This just happens to be.
