Summary

The problem here is that Jesus’ warning is a puzzle. But, looking at the passage in context it’s not that hard to see what it’s about. We’ll cover the meaning of “the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod”. We’ll also find out why Jesus healed a blind man in two stages and how it relates to the disciples understanding of Jesus. This is a verse by verse study of Mark 8:13-26 and it is part of a larger verse by verse study through Mark, available here https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZ3iRMLYFlHuGenHwUdeiQ5M-uj5XW4sF If you love this ministry and want to (and can afford to) help support my continued production of free content then please click here. https://biblethinker.org/index.php/donate

I'm Pastor Mike Winger and this is Bible Thinker the program dedicated to thinking

0:05.8

biblically about everything. I think that it's kind of a true principle in life

0:11.9

that when people warn us about something

0:16.1

our fear is directly related to how much respect we have for that person.

0:20.8

You know, so like if a four-year-old warns you that there's a monster in the closet, you're not as worried, right?

0:27.0

But if you have this like friend you really respect and really trust and they warn you there's something scary in your closet you may be more serious

0:34.0

about it. In this case Jesus is warning us about something that you otherwise might not

0:38.0

be worried about. I think that our concern for the thing Jesus warns us about in this passage should be very high.

0:45.2

We should take this warning very seriously, we should consider it very thoughtfully, but there's

0:48.4

one problem and that is that Jesus' warning is a riddle. And here's Jesus you guys. He does this sometimes. He gives

0:57.3

them a warning that is a riddle. It's meant to be rittled out, thought through,

1:00.7

pondered on, we're meant to sort it you know slowly as we think about it. It's a puzzle

1:06.0

So this is the mark series part 28. We're in mark chapter 8 verse 13 and we're doing our verse by verse studies through the Gospel of Mark trying to understand it in context

1:14.0

applied into our lives simply and hopefully effectively to guard our own selves against these types of

1:20.6

warnings. So here we are verse 13, a spiritual danger that Jesus

1:24.4

warns the disciples about and us. Mark 813. Leaving them, he again

1:29.6

embarked and went away to the other side. And they had forgotten to take bread and did not have

1:36.1

more than one loaf in the boat with them and he was giving orders to them saying

1:39.8

watch out. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Levin of Herod. They began to discuss

1:47.4

with one another the fact that they had no bread. And Jesus, aware of this, said to them,

1:51.7

why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread?

1:54.5

Do you not yet see or understand?
