Summary

Saying no to leadership opportunities, and the increased impact and influence they can afford, is not a topic talked about very often today. For that we need to look at the work of the Holy Spirit in the history of the church. In Part 2 of this series, Pete looks at two towering figures in particular: Bernard of Clairvaux and Gregory of Nazianzus.

Hi, welcome to the Emotionally Healthy Leader Podcast.

My name is Pete Scazzaro.

And today is a part two on the theme of when it's time to say no to leading or leadership opportunities.

When it's time to say no to leadership opportunities.

0:12.0

This topic is so key, so important that I knew I needed to do two parts on it, not just one.

0:20.0

So last week we talked about three, I talked about

0:21.8

three reasons when it's time to say no to leadership opportunities. You know, our inner life,

0:26.1

or maturity's not ready. God's limits have come to us, and it's one of the ways God's saying to us,

0:31.2

no, or God's voice and timing. We just, God's voice, God's speaking, and we just have a sense of notice this is not it.

0:44.3

And so as I said last week, as it says, Paul writes that he desires to lead to be an overseer desires a good thing. It's beautiful. And Paul is very much committed to raising up leaders.

1:13.0

You know, Timothy was timid and fearful to take leadership in that grueling church he was leading in the city of Ephesit.

1:19.1

But I'm more concerned here in this podcast about those of us who just flippantly step into

1:24.1

leadership opportunities. We see growth, we see expansion, we think it's all good,

1:29.2

and we're not that thoughtful or prayerful about it, and almost treating church leadership like

1:33.4

moving up a ladder, bigger, better, faster. If you're wondering, why are you citing so much church

1:38.5

history? Why are you bringing all these people in? And the reason is because it's so foreign to us, this idea of slow in the 21st

1:48.1

century West, especially in the evangelical Western Church. It's a culture that if we're going to

1:53.9

learn about the slowness in ways of God, we've got to learn from the historical church.

1:58.4

We'll go back 2,000 years and the global church as well. And so I want
