Summary
For the longest time we were told our 5 year old son was suffering with severe anxiety. Turns out he fits the PDA profile which is a nervous system disability and a neurotype of its own within autism. Treating it as just anxiety never helped, but anxiety is absolutely part of it when a sensitive nervous system is set to be more reactive, requiring more control and autonomy in order to feel safe. How can we recognise PDA? What is the difference between anxiety and PDA? What is it like for the parent of a PDA child to navigate that? I'm joined by the wonderful Dr Casey Ehrlichs of @AtPeaceParents, a resource without which I would be totally lost on my parenting journey, who helps us better understand PDA, how it's characterised and precisely what a PDA nervous system needs.

| 0:00.0 | Hello, dear listener and welcome back to Owning at the Anxiety Podcast with me, your host and author |
| 0:04.5 | of Everything I Wish I'd known about anxiety, Caroline Forin. This week, my focus is on the subject of |
| 0:09.8 | PDA, which is very close to my heart and close to home for us as my son fits the PDA profile. |
| 0:14.9 | That is pathological demand avoidance and it's a neurotype within autism. The reason I want to |
| 0:20.2 | focus on it is because the intersection |
| 0:22.6 | between PDA and anxiety is not insignificant. For the longest time, we were told that our son was |
| 0:30.1 | just anxious and that anxiety was the thing we needed to focus on. But what do you do or how do you |
| 0:35.6 | approach it or how do you know when there's something more |
| 0:38.2 | going on under the hood pda has also taught me a lot when it comes to nervous system and anxiety in |
| 0:44.7 | general and that is really anxiety is is your nervous system not looking to harm you but looking |
| 0:51.3 | for safety and signals of safety and sometimes the best thing we can do is not to push ourselves, but looking for safety and signals of safety. And sometimes the best thing we can do |
| 0:55.2 | is not to push ourselves more, but to demand a little bit less of ourselves. So there's a huge |
| 1:00.7 | overlap between anxiety and PDA. And here I'm joined by Dr. Casey Ellrix, who runs the at-piece |
| 1:06.4 | parents page. She's phenomenal. She's like my go-to person for all things, PDA. And if this is something |
| 1:12.7 | you suspect you might fit or your child does or your child is already known to have a PDA profile |
| 1:17.6 | or you think there's something more than anxiety at play in your household, this is the episode for |
| 1:22.6 | you. Thank you so much to Casey and thank you for listening. |
| 1:32.0 | Casey, thank you so much for joining me on Owning It the Anxiety podcast. |
