Summary

Joy is not a crumb. It's cookouts with soul music, celebrating what Ossie Davis called the full sweetness of our Blackness. But what exactly does the phrase "joy is resistance," which has been flooding social media, mean? This Juneteenth, we're asking what joy actually is, when it can be a tool for social change, and why the slogan has become so popular -- even when joy itself feels more tenuous.

these overwhelming times. Except, of course, this wouldn't be a code switch episode if we didn't

summer about that phrase, joy is resistance that she kept seeing repeated on social media

over and over. So if I understand things correctly, you're coming to the mic today to talk about

1:26.5

joy. Yes, joy. Okay. Deep breaths everyone.

1:32.7

Parker, it's joy. Why, why do you sound nervous? Because I know you and no offense, but you have a way

1:40.7

sometimes of making fun things not that fun.

1:50.1

So, frankly, I guess I'm just concerned that you're about to ruin the concept of joy for me.

1:52.2

God, you know me too well.

1:52.6

Mm-hmm.

1:58.1

But no, I don't think I'm going to ruin anyone's idea of joy.

2:01.6
