We all love our dogs and want to help them, but sometimes that help has the opposite effect of what we intend! That's what I'm covering in this episode, so you can get the behaviour you really want. Learn how letting go of control will have your dog buy-in to your training and create a relationship of mutual happiness.
In the episode you'll hear:
- About triggers, opposition reflex and drive.
- What self control really is, and how our control is an illusion.
- How games are a win for everyone even if there's a fail (yes … the F word!).
- Why your dog's buy-in to your training results in a lifetime of joy.

| 0:00.0 | Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Shape by Dog or if you're watching on video, |
| 0:15.7 | it might be shaped by humidity as my hair has gone a little crazy. I am Susan Garrett. I want to share with you |
| 0:23.1 | that I've been teaching dog training all over the world, giving seminars for probably 30 years now, |
| 0:30.3 | more than 30 years actually. One of the things that I'm really well known for is my ability |
| 0:35.9 | to help people create drive in unusual dogs. |
| 0:40.5 | I mean, dogs that wouldn't normally be driven. Why is drive important? Because it gets us |
| 0:45.7 | engagement, which allows us to train a dog a lot easier. This episode isn't about drive, by the way, |
| 0:51.9 | but I'm going to be getting to that. There are two things |
| 0:54.3 | that are important when I'm engaging a dog and getting them more driven for work. The first is |
| 1:00.0 | building in words that become triggers, that the dog anticipates something amazing is about to happen. |
| 1:06.9 | So, the easiest word and the most common is the word ready. So you don't just go to the dog and say, ready. |
| 1:13.1 | And by sharing this episode, my dog's around, there might be some barking. |
| 1:16.4 | I'm not sure. |
| 1:16.9 | We'll find out. |
| 1:17.7 | It's almost like a challenge when you say to the dog, are you ready? |
| 1:23.8 | And you're building up anticipation, ready? |
| 1:32.2 | That something amazing is about to happen in my dogs. |
| 1:39.2 | No, I know peach pie that something amazing is about to happen. Just kidding. I'm not really. |
| 1:45.3 | So, building in a verbal cue is part of everybody. The whole house is awake right now. |
| 1:53.9 | The second part of building drive is engaging something in the dog called the opposition reflex. |
| 1:59.8 | You've probably all seen the opposition reflex in action. When you push against the dog, they automatically are wired to lean into that push. |
| 2:04.3 | You push on their chest, they're going to lean into that push. And it creates energy. So, when you |
