At only five years old, she lost her beloved grandmother Martha, the woman who had brought her and her father from the Dominican Republic to New York, who filled her early childhood with birthday parties, sleepovers, and love. Then one night, she had a dream—or what she now believes was something much more. In it, she saw her grandmother at a bus stop. Overjoyed, she ran to her, hugged her, and begged her to stay. But when the bus arrived, her grandmother told her the words she has never forgotten: “You can’t come with me. It’s not your time.”

As the bus doors closed, she woke up sobbing—crying not just from a dream, but from an encounter that felt like a visitation.
