Um.

I have three pets, two cats and a dog. My dog, a German shepherd named Fiddle, joined our family about a year ago. Fiddle really, really,

really wants to be best friends with my cats, Izzy, and Heidi. But in typical cat fashion,

those two want nothing to do with a loud, stinky 55-pound goober that keeps trying to sniff their

butts.

I love my pets, but sometimes my house feels like a zoo. And just like at the zoo, everybody needs to be fed the right food, and we have to scoop litter boxes and pick up doggy poo piles.

Honestly, if you think about it, having pets is kind of a strange thing.

We humans just sometimes have these little animal friends that share our homes and demand treats in exchange for companionship and snuggles.

And don't get me wrong, the snuggles are totally worth it.

But who decided this was the plan?

It's just like my friend Herschel was asking the other day.

Hi, my name is Herschel, and I'm from Lineback, New York. And my question is, when did people first start having pets?

We know people started hanging out with dogs a long time ago, upwards of 20,000 years.

My name's David Ian Howe.

I am an anthropologist, which means I study people, and I also study their dogs, because

dogs are such a part of being of a human. I would say just like today,

people probably picked up lizards or small birds or little caterpillars and brought them home to

their parents and their parents would say, ew, get it out of here. And, you know, there's really

no way to maintain or to keep a caterpillar or a lizard, especially when you are in

cave people times. But we do know that eventually people started hanging out with dogs and cats.
