Today's question is coming from a reader on Instagram who wants to know how to know when root crops are ripe.

It's a good question because as the name implies they're growing underground so you can't really see them or can you that is the question that we're answering today guys so the first and most obvious suggestion I have for this this question is you you know pay attention to the seed packet if it says

it's a 70 day variety well then 70 days from when you plant it you may want to take a

peak and at least take a little check in on that plant

and see if it's ready to go. Now that's a pretty obvious suggestion, so I don't think I would

need to do a podcast episode on that.

So another thing to think about is let's say you're growing a carrot or a beat.

Well, these are plants that do grow partially above the soil,

especially as they mature.

And so you can take a look at the diameter of the root crop.

Oftentimes, you may need to brush a little bit of the soil away.

But let's say carrots. Let's say you've planted carrots in a nice little line

and you're curious how they're doing.

Well, just go ahead and brush the soil away

just slightly and see that diameter. you can tell you know based on the

seed packet again how large they're supposed to get how deep they're supposed to go and

based on the diameter of the top you can sort of infer how deep they have grown and thus

if they're ready to harvest or not.

Now another thing you can do is as you're growing a root crop like a carrot, one that maybe you didn't thin as well as you should have,
