racing each other to IPOs next year, and both are likely to make huge splashes when they do.

Banks vying to take Uber public this week valued the company at $120 billion, almost twice its

valuation just two months ago in August. Lyft, which is smaller but

growing faster, is valued at more than $15 billion. Lyft has been planning for some time to go

public next spring, but Uber only recently moved up its projected IPO from late next year

to early 2019, a shift that puts it in the middle of Lyft's lane. According to agreements with

its investors, Uber needs to complete an IPO before the year's end. But Lyft needs to beat Uber
