Summary

On this third Sunday of Advent, we hear for the first time this season of the great figure of John the Baptist. It’s not really possible to understand Jesus apart from his precursor. All four Gospels compel us to come to grips with John. His job is always the same: he points to Jesus. If we’re staring at John, we’re missing the point. Well, in our Gospel for today, John indicates the Lord in a most distinctive manner.

1:35.0

indicates the Lord. Well, in the gospel for today the Baptist indicates Jesus in a

1:42.6

most distinctive manner and it's worth reflecting on. As the story opens John is

1:49.8

in prison. So he's been finally arrested by his nemesis Herod antipos. Remember

1:55.0

he was opposing Herod's marriage to his brother's wife. And so he railed

2:01.0

against him and finally Herod had him in prison. So John's public ministry is

2:06.4

over and he's within a few days or maybe weeks of his execution. And he sends
