Thank you. This is Heritage Explains. In 1948, Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981, which abolished racial segregation

in the United States military.

In 1976, Gerald Ford signed Executive Order 11905, which, in the wake of abuses by the CIA, forbade the U.S. government from participating in political assassinations.

In 2001, George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13769, which created the Department of Homeland Security, following the September 11th attacks.

The executive order is a tool the Constitution places at the President's disposal, allowing him to affect changes within the executive branch of government.

As President Donald Trump steps into office this week, he has signed many such orders,

which have already had broad impact on the way the federal government works.

I sat down with Heritage fellow Steve Groves to better understand these changes.
