Welcome to the show. All week, millions of Americans and people around the world watched the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

It was a made-for-TV event replete with music, celebrities, and a lot of speeches. The point of these

conventions is, of course, to formally anoint a nominee, but that was a foregone conclusion here.

The real point was for Democrats to generate excitement, showcase a big tent, and to unify around

their candidate. They had two former presidents

speak, as well as the current one, in sharp contrast to the Republican National Convention

where there are almost no party grandees. The DNC had representatives from across not only

their political spectrum, they also included several Republicans who warned

Americans not to vote for Trump.

Foreign policy doesn't play a huge role in these conventions, but it was a factor.

In her speech on Thursday night, Vice President Kamala Harris tried to contrast her support

for Ukraine with what she suggested

was Trump's coziness with dictators. She promised a strong military, signaled toughness on Iran
