Not everything that you experience in life deserves a response in that moment. In fact, most of it doesn't. If you're having a conversation with your wife and it's bothering you, you can say, hey, you know, thank you for bringing that to my attention. Let me think on that a little bit. If your kids say something that maybe is rude or upsets you or a client or your boss or a coworker or a colleague, et cetera, et cetera.

I was watching one of my favorite movies, which is Gladiator just the other day. And the quote that really stood out to me as I was watching the movie was by Maximus, which said, what we do echoes in eternity.
