Summary

Do you think Jesus had a favorite bird? If he did it might have been... (spoiler alert!)...

The house sparrow!

The house sparrow is one of the most common birds, found on every continent except Antartica. The oldest fossil of a house sparrow was found in Bethlehem. It's likely that Jesus grew up with house sparrows much like the ones in our own yards! But when we learn a little more about how Jesus taught using birds in the Bible, and how much it takes to feed a house sparrow, we discover powerful truth in God's promise of provision.

through nature. Today we're going to look at what Jesus' favorite bird might have been. Do you

0:31.9

think Jesus had favorites in what he made? Did you even know that Jesus was at creation?

0:39.3

Colossians 116 when it's talking about Jesus it says that through his power, so

0:44.3

that's through Jesus power, all things were made, things in heaven and on earth.

0:50.3

And so we can actually know that Jesus was at creation with God. And I love thinking about Jesus

0:58.1

walking through creation after he made everything and listening to the songs of the birds that he

1:05.2

had just made. Or maybe he stared up at the clouds and thought about the shapes that reflected all he had made that week.

1:12.6

Have you ever done that?

1:13.5

Have you ever laid in the grass and just stared up at those clouds and thought, oh, that looks like a turtle or that looks like a snake?

1:21.9

I wonder if Jesus did that too, looking at the clouds and thinking, oh, that looks like that bird that I just made, or that

1:27.9

looks like the hyena or the camel or the giraffe. Or maybe he walked along the stream counting

frogs or fish. I love thinking about him enjoying nature like we do. So if Jesus did have favorite

things amid what he made, I have a guess as to what

1:48.2

his favorite bird might have been. But first, I have a question for you. Do you have a favorite

bird? In the bird watching world, sometimes we refer to our favorite bird as our spark bird.

2:02.6

And that's the bird that when we saw it, it sparked our interest in finding more birds.

2:07.9

So my spark bird is actually a black and white warbler.

2:11.7

I was walking along the river one day and there was this adorable little black and white bird hopping. Did you know birds hop?

2:20.0

It was hopping up this cottonwood tree. And I thought, I have never seen a bird like that before.

2:25.9

And so I looked it up and found that it was a black and white warbler who was migrating through.
