This is one of those stories, ordinary on the surface, unsettling underneath, and impossible

for the storyteller to forget. It begins in Alberta, Canada, a place known for big skies, enormous winds, and winters that carved themselves into memory.

The haunting didn't take place in an abandoned farmhouse or an old mining shack or anything you might expect to see on a paranormal documentary.

It unfolded in an ordinary family home. A rental, a

transition space, the kind of house people move into after life suddenly rearranges itself.

She was five at the time, five years old, carrying the emotional fallout of her parents' separation

before she even had the words for it.

She, her mom, and her younger sister moved in with her mom's boyfriend,

someone who tried to be kind, but who was ultimately just part of the scenery in her memory of the house.

What mattered most was the house itself, or maybe what lived inside it.

At her father's home, nothing strange had ever happened. No cold chills, no voices, no flickers of movement in the corner of her eye,

just the normal noises of a normal childhood. But the moment she stepped into this new place,

something felt off. Not threatening at first, just different, too still, too aware.

The house had only two levels, a main floor and a basement.

And because space was tight upstairs, her mom tried to be practical, while also trying to make her daughter feel valued.

So she got a new bed, brand new blankets, a basement bedroom decorated just for her.
