Summary

Rocket engines have to push REALLY hard against Earth’s gravity to get up off the ground. The rockets that NASA sends into space weigh over a million pounds! That is a LOT to try to lift into the air! So what kind of fuel do those powerful rocket engines use? We asked NASA scientist Erik Axdahl to help us find the answer. Got a question orbiting your mind? Send it to us at BrainsOn.org/contact, and we’ll launch an answer your way. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Oh, wait, there's still some of that fire sauce I got from that mini mart next to the asteroid belt.

1:13.2

And we're going to need some prune juice and baking powder, obviously. And wait, what?

1:20.8

That's not how rocket fuel works on your planet? Huh, interesting. Maybe we can trade recipes.

1:23.2

It's a good thing Naomi asked about this, too.

1:29.5

There are three kinds of rockets, and they would use three different kinds of fuel.

1:33.5

My name is Eric Axall, and I'm an aerospace engineer for NASA.

1:39.9

The first kind of rocket is a liquid-fueled rocket, and so that's a rocket that has fuel tanks on board, and that fuel could be things like hydrogen, liquid hydrogen fuel, or a liquid kerosene fuel.

1:48.1

Kerosene are essentially very highly refined oil, essentially.

1:51.7

So those are two common fuels that are using a liquid rocket.

1:56.2

And then oxygen is a common oxidizer that you would burn with that fuel to make the hot gases that come

out of the engine at the end. Another kind of rocket is called a solid rocket. A solid rocket,
