Summary

When life gets turbulent, is self-care self-indulgent?

Emma Heming Willis is a mother, step-mother, wife, and an advocate. After her husband, Bruce Willis, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, she became a passionate voice for care partners and families navigating neurodegenerative disease. In this episode we talk about:

  • The moment Bruce was diagnosed

  • How to ask for and accept help when you need it
  • Why learning to care for other people is a skill we should all develop (and how it might actually enhance your life)

0:46.7

To be clear, many of those things are still true of me, but life has intervened in such a way that I've learned a lot in the intervening years about caregiving,

0:55.5

something I really never thought about previously.

0:58.9

Having a child, having a wife with health problems, having parents with pretty significant health problems as well, that shit will change you.

1:05.7

And I've actually come to see caregiving as an incredibly important skill.

1:09.8

And it's one that you can actually think about

Not for nothing, learning how to do this is also good for the world.

1:33.6

So today, we're going to talk to somebody who did not expect to be caregiving at her age,

1:38.7

at least not caregiving in the way that has been demanded of her.

Emma Heming Willis was in her mid-40s when her husband, the movie star

Bruce Willis, got a devastating diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia or FTT. At the time, Emma

was a mother with two little kids, and all of a sudden she had to become a caregiver for her
