The other day I came home and gave my wife some flowers. She asked me why I did it and I said,

well, it's because I'm your husband and it's my duty to be nice to you and to do nice things for you and to treat you well.

Okay, I didn't really say that, and I also didn't really bring flowers.

But imagine I did. How well do you think it would go if I said that to my wife?

Well, it's because I was thinking about you, and I love you, and these are really far too small,

but I hope they'll give you just a fraction of the joy that you give me.

Which one of those two answers is better? Which one of those two answers is true? Well in a way both are actually true. Husbands make promises to wives and that means that they have duties and responsibilities.

So it's true for me to say I did this because it's my duty.

It is my duty.

But it's also true that I love my wife and I like to do nice things for her because I love her.

But I think we know which one of the two is better. It's not just doing the right thing out of duty, it's doing the right thing out of duty, it's doing the right thing with the right heart, with the best motivations.
