what is going on in the banking system?

The banking system has relied for a long time on having a small amount of reserves. And banks, of course, take in money from people like you and me.

And then they lend that money out. So when you go into a bank, it's not it's not flush with cash. It has some cash in reserve enough to typically satisfy depositors who want to make withdrawals.

But if everybody wanted to make a withdrawal, the government, the bank wouldn't have the money. Now you can say, well, yeah, but there's banks are insured by the FDIC.
