Summary

On this week's episode of the pod, we are joined by Dr. Michelle Wong-- a science educator and cosmetic chemist to talk all things related to sunscreen! We kick off this episode with a discussion about skin cancer and its prevalence and the importance of prevention and early detection. We ease into things with a primer on the history of sunscreen and its evolution over time. We dive into the basics of sunscreen, its composition, and the different types of sunscreens. We also discuss the different types of UV light and the risks associated with UV radiation and DNA damage as it related to aging and cancer. We discuss various types of skin cancer and risk factors (including sun exposure). We answered a bunch of questions for our "Heard from the Herd" segment, including how to properly apply sun screen, the impact on the environment, and more. As usual, we spend some time debunking chemophobia-- this time related to the chemicals in sunscreen. This is a very timely episode as we kick off summer-- you don't want to miss it! Okay, so before we get into all the good stuff this episode, I just want to recap last week's episode. So last week,

0:40.4

we were joined by the amazing Dr. Adrian Chavez, who's a PhD in nutrition, to discuss the

autoimmune protocol diet. So we started with an overview of the diet itself, how it came to be popular, and the claims

0:56.8

that it makes. We then turned to focus on what autoimmune disorders are, the incredible

1:03.9

diversity of them, as well as what inflammation actually means. We dug into the details of the diet, including which foods it, quote,

1:13.2

unquote, allows and which it prohibits before turning toward the data. We spent some time

1:20.9

discussing the very limited number of studies out there on the diet and ultimately the

1:26.0

substantial flaws in the data that claim to support

1:29.4

the autoimmune diet. And finally, we discussed some of the risks associated with implementing

1:36.4

a rigid and restrictive elimination diet such as this and emphasize that healthful diet habits

1:42.8

are more important than eliminating entire food groups.
