Today, why are so many vegetables vanishing from British supermarkets?

The Guardian is a foodie.

Picture the scene. A few days ago, outside a supermarket, somewhere in Oxford.

But it could be anywhere in the UK.

Today, there's plenty of broccoli, but nip cucumbers. The other day, there were plenty of cucumbers, but no broccoli.

The martos are short. There are no peppers.

Salads, they've got tomatoes, just.

The peppers, definitely. So, yeah, a few shortage. In some of the shelves, they kind of broke them out.

So, they looked the same, but they weren't. And the price was just as well.

Product aisles lying empty.

Shortages of broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes.

Very few tomatoes. The ones that they had were the sort of tiny cherry ones.

They were almost gray, to be honest.

Frustrated customers, ready to take radical action.

They've got signs up in there saying it's because of the bad weather.

I was slightly tempted to write on it and break it.

I didn't fandalise the signs.

People confronting a new reality. And a new dinner menu.

Sometimes I think we could be a little bit more self-sufficient. Do a bit more frass-house, rather than keep impolting everything.

Having courjettes in the middle of winter, about something that I was never used to.

It's modern life nowadays. It's what happens.
