Dr. Carter G. Woodson is hailed as the father of Black history.

But his pride in Black life wasn't shaped only by books or scholarship.

It was forged by the example his father said, a man who refused to accept humiliation, even under slavery.

James Henry Woodson was enslaved on the Tony plantation,

located near Richmond, Virginia.

During the Civil War, his enslaver, Jack Tony,

had loaned Woodson out as a ditch digger

to a man named James Stratton.

However, when Stratton whipped Woodson that day,

Woodson whipped him right back.

Knowing retaliation was inevitable and likely deadly.

Woodson ran back to the Tony plantation.

There, Woodson explained what Stratton had done, then grabbed his things and headed for Richmond

to escape more punishment.

It was on the way that some Union cavalry soldiers stopped to question him.

After admitting to them that he was running for his life,

the Union soldiers offered to take Woodson back to Stratton.

Here's the kicker.

When they arrived, they tied Stratton up and whipped him again.

From there, Woodson remained with the Union soldiers for the rest of the war.
