Summary

Ohio State spent last weekend retooling its secondary for the future, but it also brings up a question of what that future will look like. On this Tuesday episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means and Andrew Gillis take a look at the commitments of 2024 safety Leroy Roker and 2025 cornerback Blake Woodby. The two additions may paint a of picture of how different the two parts of OSU’s secondary recruiting have gone. Tim Walton has gotten off to a hot start on the recruiting trail, fueled mostly by an uptick in in-state talent. But landing Woodby proved his ability to go national with his efforts as the fifth top-100 recruit he’s landed despite this being only his second year on the staff. Perry Eliano was brought in as a young coach with a potentially high upside both as a developer and a recruiter. The development has been there as his starting trio of Josh Proctor, Lathan Ransom and Sonny Styles have played at a high level this year. He even has freshman Malik Hartford ahead of schedule as a guy on pace to win a starting spot in 2024. But the recruiting trail hasn’t been as kind to him as he’s struck out on his top options in back-to-back classes The future for the cornerback room is high. But should OSU be worried about its safety room? Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

0:36.0

which means it's time to talk recruiting and there is a ton to talk about, especially in the secondary,

0:42.0

where Ohio State got pretty busy over the past week and a half here, landing two commitments,

0:47.0

one in the 2024 class, one in the 2025 class. Andrew, let's start with that 2024 kid,

0:53.0

with that second, not second defensive back, but second safety in the class. Who did Ohio state add?

0:59.0

I think that day there was some momentum that you kind of saw building for it, where word kind of started to get out a little bit.

1:06.0

But Ohio State got a verbal commitment from Lee Roy Roker at a Bishop Verow in Fort Myers, Florida.

1:13.0

That is his first year at Bishop Verow. He did transfer in going into this season.

1:18.0

So he was at nearby school in Fort Myers, so moving up and moving up in the world for him.

1:26.0

But yeah, he's currently ranked the 1,153rd player in the 247 composite rankings.

1:35.0

That pretty safely puts him last in the class, Eric Mensa, previously held that, the defensive linemen that they just flipped from Virginia Tech a few weeks ago.

1:45.0

He was number 820. But Roker joins the class. He's the second safety in the class.

1:50.0

Obviously, they have Jalen McClain. He is number 258 nationally. So now they have two.

1:55.0

They needed two in this class, pretty badly. They needed they, you know, I think you look at the Roker kid and you just see numbers.

2:04.0

Well, you know, I think that that was kind of the most important thing that that I noticed out of that.

2:08.0

And then I think you would agree that they just needed a body like they needed somebody there to be that second safety.

2:14.0

Because you hear all you hear it all from, you know, from Jim Knowles and from Ryan Day when he talks about the defense and from everybody that talks about the defense of the defensive staff that this is a safety driven defense.

2:24.0

And this is a defense that is kind of built with with the safety is doing a lot.

2:30.0

And to only have one safety in the class isn't good. So you needed a second one. So they go get Roker.

2:35.0

Roker was pretty, I mean, pretty under the radar. I guess if that's the right way to say it.

2:41.0

You know, looking at his 247 page, he only had offers from Iowa, Miami, ODU, and that's ODU, Old Dominion. I always mixed that up.
