I'm Dorothy Wickenden, executive editor of The New Yorker. On March 16th, a 21-year-old gunman killed eight people in a series of shootings in Atlanta area spas and massage parlors. Six of the victims were women of Asian descent.

Although the shooter has not been charged with committing a hate crime,

he told the police that the women were temptations,

whom he needed to eliminate.

He reportedly said in one spa that he was going to kill all Asians.

Anti-Asian violence has surged across the country in the past year.

A study by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism found that reports of hate crimes

targeting Asian people are up by 150 percent, and anti-Asian violence has risen more than 800% in New York City alone.

Last week, President Biden and Vice President Harris went to Atlanta to condemn the spa shootings

and to meet with leaders in the city's Asian-American community.
