Welcome to 2024 and the program that brings you the latest breakthroughs in science, technology and medicine

with me, Chris Smith.

This time we're going to consult experts in their different scientific fields and ask them, what do they think the next what 2024 has in store, at least scientifically speaking,

in a number of key areas. And we begin with some of the biggest health problems that policy makers are likely to confront in the year ahead and what we can do about them.

I've been speaking to Linda Bold, who's the Bruce and John Asher chair in public health at the University of Edinburgh.

She's also chief social policy advisor for the Scottish government.

I began by asking her what she's made of what's been dubbed the vaping pandemic.

I am surprised to some degree in terms of the rise of the use of these products amongst young

people and people who don't smoke.

And the reason or the biggest explanation for that, from my perspective, is actually the market, it's product innovation. So in countries where these products are legal and there's many countries that have banned them around the world.

The manufacturers came up with disposable vapes really over the last couple of years.

They're very cheap, they're accessible. They're marketed to young people and that's

what's driving the uptake. Do we have any data yet
