Summary

This week’s question from our Discord member, msoli:

“You have talked extensively about how style or fashion has come from the hip hop community, the skateboarding community, and the basketball community. Where do you see style coming from now? The same places? Somewhere new? Does it matter based on your age?”

Mike heads design for Good Company Apparel, so this question is mostly for him.

All right, here's the question, M. Soley asks, you have talked extensively about how

0:14.4

style or fashion has, your style or fashion is probably what it means to say, has come

0:20.2

from hip hop, the hip hop community, skateboarding community, basketball community, year style

0:27.4

coming from now, the same places, somewhere new. Does it matter based on your age?

0:32.1

The answer to the last question is yes, but go ahead. Yeah, I think age matters somewhat.

0:38.2

I do think the coolest thing about where we're at currently in fashion or like style, I think

0:43.7

there's a definition between fashion and style. Fashionable, I would say I have some style

0:49.7

because to me, the difference is like fashion is like Louis Vuitton, fashion is name brand,

0:56.6

fashion is this, where style, you could go to Goodwill and still come out looking decent,

1:02.3

right? Style is like how you put it together, style is like what you create, they create

1:07.7

that you purchase. So anyone can have style, but fashion is like its entity, it's over there.

1:14.8

And to me, yeah, all of it's obviously generational, right? What's popular now is what was popular

1:22.5

20 years ago, because the creators now are the people, so everyone's 30 to 40 right

1:31.6

now running the fashion game, they're creating things that they grew up wearing. And that's

1:37.3

how I create. And kind of like that, yeah, basketball, I grew up playing basketball in

1:41.7

the basketball culture in niche, sneakers or a thing, hip hop is a thing, influence hip hop

1:48.4

and stuff started to bleed into skateboarding, skateboarding fashion started to bleed into

1:51.7

hip hop, then you find, you know, some guys that just flipped the entire game on its head,

1:57.4

guys like Virgil Abelau, Kanye West, and they took that world and just made babies with

2:04.0

Louis Vuitton in this high fashion world. But now because of them, and probably because

2:10.3

the internet, but everything's in fashion. Yeah, you know, there's no, the lines are very,

2:17.5

broad now where, yeah, every day if you're wearing like skinny jeans, you might not be
