Summary
Patrick Madrid had a heartfelt conversation with Ava, who was grappling with the heavy burden of suicidal thoughts.
The Church's Loving Perspective
Ava's question about the Catholic Church's view on suicide led to an enlightening and tender explanation. Patrick shared that while the Church views suicide as a serious sin because it involves taking one’s own life, it also recognizes the intense pain and suffering that often lead to such a tragic decision.
He explained that our desire to live is a natural gift from God, and when someone feels compelled to end their life, it’s usually because they're under unimaginable stress, whether it’s mental illness, extreme fear, or deep depression. The Church, in her wisdom and compassion, understands that many people who end their lives are not fully responsible due to their overwhelming anguish.
Offering Hope and a Helping Hand
When Ava revealed she was personally struggling, Patrick immediately provided her with the 988 hotline, a lifeline for those in crisis, reminding her of the importance of reaching out to trained professionals who are ready to help 24/7.
But Patrick didn’t stop there. He asked Ava to call him back in a week, letting her know she wasn’t alone. Would you consider praying for Ava and offering up your suffering for her?
If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, remember that you are not alone. Help is available, and people care about you.
Remember, no matter how dark things may seem, there is always hope and love waiting to embrace you.

| 0:00.0 | Let's go now to Ava. Welcome. Thank you. Hi, Patrick. What is the Catholic's |
| 0:08.2 | Church view on suicide? Well, in the catechism, the church is very clear that suicide is something |
| 0:16.5 | that we recognize people who commit suicide. I got an email from somebody yesterday saying, |
| 0:24.5 | people don't commit suicide. Yes, they do. I won't get into the polemic here, but people |
| 0:30.1 | who commit suicide very often, if not most often, are driven to it by some very strong |
| 0:36.8 | external force beyond their ability to withstand. |
| 0:40.7 | So it could be a mental illness, it could be grave fear, it could be any number of things, |
| 0:46.2 | because it's so unnatural for one to take his own life. |
| 0:49.3 | And we have such a strong will to live. |
| 0:52.0 | It's just built into us. |
| 0:53.1 | If you've ever had like a near drowning experience, |
| 0:55.9 | it's even wired into your body. If you've ever had that experience, you know that suddenly, |
| 1:01.7 | if you feel like you're drowning, the body just takes over and starts thrashing. You don't even |
| 1:06.1 | have to think about doing anything. The body just sort of struggles mightily to stay alive if your oxygen, |
| 1:13.8 | for example, is being blocked. And in the same way, the church recognizes that people who have |
| 1:20.7 | this innate will to live must be going through some kind of extreme duress in order to even |
| 1:26.2 | consider, much less carry out the act of |
| 1:29.0 | suicide. So we'll start with that. The church in her compassion recognizes these really serious |
| 1:35.2 | problems. Nonetheless, the church also says that suicide, like any other word that ends inside, C-I-D-E, |
| 1:47.6 | so fratricide is killing of your brother, matricide killing your mother, the killing of your father, genocide is killing of whole people's, suicide is |
| 1:54.3 | killing of oneself. And the church says that these indeed are intrinsically evil acts, and you can |
| 2:00.6 | never justify on moral grounds killing yourself. |
