0:53.7	But Priyanka, what is actually going on at the moment?
0:56.5	So over the past week, the Taliban has taken over 12 provincial cities in Afghanistan.
1:01.4	That's at a rate that's been really shocking and unexpected to the US and the rest of the international community.
1:07.1	The Taliban's conquest include Kandahar, which is the country's second largest city.
1:11.4	And according to US intelligence officials, the country's capital of Kabul could also fault the Taliban within 30 to 90 days.
1:18.4	Okay, so let's back up for a second. Can you give a little background on what actually led up to all of this?
1:23.6	Definitely. So earlier this year, President Biden promised to withdraw all American troops from Afghanistan.
1:29.1	That was scheduled to happen by the end of this month, August 31st.
1:32.7	It was a really big deal. American troops had been there for over 20 years.
1:36.3	It's been super expensive over a trillion dollars and very, very deadly.
1:40.9	Thousands of US service members have lost their lives.
1:43.5	And more than 71,000 Afghan and Pakistani civilians have died because of the war as well.
