The embargo moment has passed. I'm not sharing anything that you're not supposed to know or probably

haven't heard already. But there are three lines to it and they seem to me to be strangely contradictory.

Zombie style knives and machetes will be outlawed under legislation laid tomorrow

ban builds on some of the UK's existing knife laws which are among the toughest in the world

and then there is talk of a surrender scheme which will be launched in the summer to remove these

knives from our streets we've been there haven't we? I've dealt with people

from charities that specialize in, in sort of knife amnesties and put sort of skips, sealed skips,

as it were, into which you can drop stuff, no questions asked. And every now and then they

release photographs of some of the absolutely hideous weapons that have turned up in these silos.

But they can't help themselves, can they?

So they're announcing bans on knives while boasting about having some of the toughest knife laws in the world,

which suggests to me that however tough these knife laws are, they're not working very well.

To which I suppose you're perfectly entitled to respond by saying, well, they're not working very well. To which I suppose you're perfectly

entitled to respond by saying, well, they need to be even tougher then. But if they're

already among the toughest in the world, unless of course the Tories are fibbing to you again,

if they're already among the toughest in the world, then there is an argument to be made for

saying that toughness perhaps isn't the answer. It's tempting,
