Up a long patch of mountain road in western North Carolina is where you'll find me and my family.

We've been living here for decades. We've raised kids, chickens, and goats. A happy, remote life.

And still, I get questions all the time asking if we're the only black family where we live.

And to help me cope or understand my daily life, I don't do yoga, drink, or go to therapy.

I go to history.

History lets me understand why few black people live in these mountains I call home.

Or how black soldiers returning home from World War I led the way for a veteran like me to join the middle class.

And so I was able to see that it was possible to move from one class to another.

History lets me look at the long record of American health care, ignoring or exploiting black

bodies. Why did I have to be near death's door before my mama could take me to a doctor?
