Summary

Last week's bombshell news of USC and UCLA moving to the Big Ten hasn't really sunk in yet, and we're already wondering what is next in the world of conference expansion. Is Notre Dame and Stanford on the verge of joining the B1G? What's the end game for the conference? How many teams does the Big Ten eventually want. Also, what's next for the SEC? Is it going to poach the top programs from the ACC? Is the Pac 12 going to dissolve? What about the Big 12 and ACC? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss all of that and more on the Monday 5ish. Good morning, Bucknotters. Welcome to the Buckknuts Morning 5. Here on Tuesday, July 5th, 2022.

I am Dave Biddle. I am very happy to join by Steve Hellwagon. We hope everyone had a great

0:37.0

fourth of July weekend. It was nice getting an extra day in there. And even more times, Steve,

0:43.0

to digest the huge bombshell news from last week's first time you and I've had a

0:48.0

chance to talk about it, at least on the air. USC and UCLA joining the Big Ten.

0:52.0

We'll get into the crux of the show later, which is going to be what's next.

0:56.0

But now that we've had a few days to digest it, what were your initial thoughts?

1:01.0

And do you like the fact that the Trojans and the Bruins are joining the conference?

1:05.0

Well, first of all, I was on a quick trip to Chicago. So I was kind of out of the loop.

1:11.0

I've checking my phone every little bit. And then this just comes out of left field.

1:16.0

The report from, I think John Wilner from the San Jose Mercury News was the first one that kind of broke

1:23.0

at midday, maybe Thursday of last week. I don't recall which day Wednesday or Thursday.

1:30.0

And it comes completely out of left field. I think they kept a lid on it.

1:35.0

I guess there is some speculation that it was something that USC and UCLA banded together and came to the Big Ten.

1:42.0

And really, I think on the eve of when we believe a new Big Ten media deal will be struck.

1:51.0

And Kevin Warren has been saying that it would be done by now.

1:56.0

I think USC and UCLA saw that now was the time to get out from underneath the baggage, the rubble of the Pac-12, the rabble, I guess, of the Pac-12.

2:07.0

Well, that may be the better way to put it. And finally extricate themselves from what's been holding them back for making all that money.

2:17.0

So, you know, Patrick Murphy and myself put together a column that we ran about our thoughts on it almost immediately.

2:29.0

And the two things that I hammered home in that were from the Big Ten standpoint.

2:35.0

This is a good deal because it allows them to now charge over a dollar per subscriber on dish and satellite in California in particular for the Big Ten network, where they're only charging pennies there now because it's out of market.
