EU Untangled kicks off with an amazing episode. We address the ongoing name dispute between Greece

and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, known internationally as Fydom. We talk about the

historic opportunity that exists today to put an end to this conflict once and for all.

Signed last June, by the prime ministers of both nations, the Prespa Agreement offers

Fidom a name that would finally be recognized by its Greek neighbors, the Republic of North

Macedonia. But the conflict is not over yet. The agreement still needs to be ratified by

the parliaments of both countries, where the name of Macedonia touches upon very sensitive

fibers of culture and identity.

The relevance of this agreement goes beyond a simple name change.

In a Balkan region that still faces big political and economic challenges, having Greece

and Fethom come to terms with each other would grant the former Yugoslav Republic the support it needs

from Greece to initiate accession talks with the European Union and NATO, the North Atlantic

Treaty Organization.

The implications are paramount.

Since the recording of this episode, one important development has taken place.

Last October the 20th, the Macedonian parliament ratified by a two-thirds

majority, the Press-by Agreement. This means that the ball now goes to the Greek parliament,

where the sitting prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, a fierce supporter of the deal, is facing

staunch opposition to the agreement from within his own governing coalition. But how and when did this conflict start?
