Well, it's been a bit of a roller coaster.

and for the last few days he has been monitoring what Israeli and American officials have called the last real chance for a ceasefire in Gaza.

On Saturday, there was a lot of optimism about a deal. By Sunday that optimism had curled.

Both sides walked away.

And then rather unexpectedly on Monday night came a statement from Hamas saying that in fact they had agreed to a ceasefire deal with Israel, and then Israel said it was reviewing what Hamas had agreed to.

So it has been a bit bewildering.

How surprising was it to you that Hamas said they had accepted the terms of the negotiation?

It was very surprising. I mean, first, I don't think anyone was expecting the Hamas leadership in

Gaza, the real decision-makers in the movement, to accept the agreement because they have

rejected just about everything that has been on the table.

It seems like we still don't know whether Israel agrees that

this agreement is real. I know you described this process as a roller coaster.

I think it's going to be several days before we know both the details of what's in it and then how Israel is going to respond to it.
