Well, that's the million-dollar question.

Marisa Lagos is a political correspondent at KQED in San Francisco.

I called her up because I wanted someone to help me figure out what the California governor's deal is right now.

I mean, I think if you look back at his career and I've been covering him since he was mayor 20 years ago,

there's always been a sense that Gavin Newsom is setting himself up for a potential presidential run,

that he has had his eyes on that site.

Was it the Vanity Fair photo spread that really sealed the deal?

Yeah, that, I mean, I'm so glad you brought that up because, ah, that continues to live rent-free in my head

and will forever. Me too. For the uninitiated, the photo shoot Marisa and I are alluding to

is from more than 20 years back, and it was in Harper's Bazaar, not Vanity Fair. Newsom was mayor of San Francisco at the time.

He had just made headlines for directing the city clerk to issue marriage licenses to

same-sex couples.

The article accompanying these photos called Newsom and his then-wife, Kimberly Gilfoyle,

the new Kennedys.

And yes, Newsom's ex is also the ex-girlfriend of Donald Trump, Jr.

Yeah, I mean, we should just say, like, the pictures, they're really something.

Like, he and Kimberly Guilfiel, Newsom, I think, laid out on a rug at some point.

On a beautiful, yeah, Persian rug. She's in a floor-length gown. He's, I think,

in a tux. They're sort of spooning. Google it. It's worth your time, even if you have no other
