Hello there, I'm Chuck Todd and this is the Chuck Todd cast.

So California Governor Gavin Newsom ended up easily beating back a recall after this

week thanks to trends inside the state's Democratic electorate and perhaps thanks to the ongoing

shifts inside the Republican Party and the wake of former President Trump.

So what will national Republicans take from this loss?

Do they just write it off as California being California or is there a missed opportunity

for the GOP and what do Democrats take from this race?

Was COVID the issue that unleashed the recall?

Actually the very issue that gave Newsom the big victory he ended up with and if you're

a Democrat do you just pay attention to what happened in one county orange?

So joining me today Christina Bellentoni, director of the Annemburg Media Center at the University

of Southern California and Tim Miller.

He's a political strategist and writer at the bull work and yes, he's based on West Coast

as well.

So let me, I'm going to pose the question in the same way that my executive producer posed

the question to me in our morning call this morning which was and you both, I want you

both to answer this question and I hope one doesn't influence, one of your answers doesn't

influence the others which is simply, is this California being California and that's what

happened today or did is this a lesson that as long as there is a way to trumpify the

Republicans, Democrats can get their coalition out.
