Matters of faith, family and the universe on Open Book this week. Don't say we don't tackle the big questions. And we begin with one I've had on the tip of my tongue around this

time of year for a pretty long time. This weekend marks the end of Jewish Book Week, London's oldest literary festival, now in its 67th year.

But what makes a Jewish book? Is it subject matter, author background, or something more intangible?

Well, joining me to get to the bottom of this thorny question,

his British writer Charlotte Mendelssohn, author of the Booker Prize nominated Almost English,

and on the line from New York, novelist Nathan Englander, whose books include what we talk

You address Jewish life directly in so much of your works.

I wonder how much you identify as a Jewish writer.

Oh, this book comes out basically 20 years to the day from my first one,

and I've been answering that question the whole time, and it's just been changing.

For so long, I just fought for this idea the whole time, and it's just been changing. For so long,

I just fought for this idea which just annoyed everyone because everyone in my books is Jewish. They

think Jewish. They eat Jewish. The weather is Jewish. Everything's Jewish about them. And I'd say I'm
