It's called Here Be Monsters. The story we're going to listen to

is about church and sexual identity. Jacob grew up Pentecostal and as a young boy

he loved going to church he sang in in the choir, he grew up to lead Bible studies, he even learned to speak in tongues.

But there was a problem because as Jacob got older, he also began to realize that he was gay, something his church, like most

Pentecostal congregations, was staunchly opposed to.

This is the story of how Jacob tried to cast Satan from his body and how eventually he came to accept his own homosexuality.

And you should know that this story contains an anti-gay slur that makes sense in the context of the story but may still

be offensive to some people.

Pentecostals believe in speaking in tongues and laying out of hands and healing the sick. Sunday mornings we would usually run into church maybe five minutes late and we would walk in after rows and rows of people.

There was a big stage with like drums and guitars and a piano.

Sometimes there would be people waving flags around.

There were people with like five foot long banners that they waved during church and people with

tambourines and often people speaking in tongues during worship and I think

that people really believed that God was speaking through their peers

and through their friends and family. There was a really strong belief that people could be

people could be possessed by demons and everyone's perceived worst behaviors

were somehow correlated to the devil and to demons.
