Summary

Today's podcast is an inside look at what it's like running for a US Military Academy.

I have the privilege of speaking with Murphy Smith from the US Naval Academy.

Murphy has run 7:57 in the 3k, 13:55 in the 5k (indoor school record), and 28:37 in the 10k which is also a school record.

Back in high school, Murphy ran 2:00 in the 800m, 4:19 in the 1600m, and 9:15 in the 3200m. He was also a state-champion in the state of North Carolina.

Last year, Murphy qualified for the 2023 NCAA XC Championships individually, and this year just missed qualifying.

In today's conversation, Murphy takes me through what it's like to be a student-athlete at the United States Naval Academy, how he's grown as a person/athlete during his time there, what he wants his legacy to be, his outlook on his future in the sport, and much more.

This one was a really fun opportunity to look into a very unique life and hear more about how Murphy excels in various areas in his life.

I think just legacy is leaving a mark and then inspiring others in the future to be something that you were or better than you were even.

And that's what's inspired me every day. Hearing some of the old grads who come back and talk is really inspiring too.

Ronnie Harris was an Olympian and he graduated in the 80s from our school, was an All-Maritan.

And hearing him talk, which is just inspiring. He's left his legacy in this place, even in the 80s from our school was an All-American and hearing him talk,

0:21.4

which is just inspiring. He's left his legacy in this place, even in the running community as a

whole. Just being able to do a smaller part of that here at the academy is something I aspire to do.

Murphy goes to the United States Naval Academy, where he is undoubtedly one of the greatest

1:03.0

runners in program history.

1:04.9

He's run 757 in the 3K, 1355 in the 5K, which is the indoor school record. And 2837 in the 10K, which is also a

1:13.2

school record. So this guy's a two-time school record holder. He's also qualified for the

1:17.1

2003 NCAA cross-country championships individually. And this past year, he barely missed

1:22.3

qualifying as he details in today's conversation back in high school as a state champion in the

1:27.0

state of North Carolina. And Murphy's just a stat. He's a really fun guy to talk to. I thoroughly enjoyed

1:32.0

and found value from this conversation. This was super enjoyable. And yeah, Murphy brings a lot of

1:37.5

wisdom to the table, specifically what it's like to be a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy.

1:42.7

Two quick notes for you before we hop into

1:44.5

this conversation. My first note for you is this conversation was recorded mid-December. So some of

1:49.9

the subjects discussed in this may seem a little bit old just because it was recorded then.
