Summary

There’s a distinct pleasure to eating wild foods that you forage yourself—unless you pick the wrong thing. Imagine the horror you’d feel upon realizing that the risotto you cooked for your dinner party was made with *Amanita phalloides*, a.k.a. the death cap. You’d found the fungi off a trail near your home, sure they were common meadow mushrooms. But you were mistaken. Now you and your friends are in the hospital, fighting for your lives. In this classic episode from our archives, we put you, the listener, in a survival scenario that will leave you forever mindful of what you harvest out there.

From Outside Magazine, this is the Outside Podcast.

One of the perceptions that people have about the world that outside magazine covers is

0:21.1

that it's dangerous, that the sports we like to do and tell stories about involve all

0:26.4

kinds of risks. But the truth is that that's a bit overblown. I'm Michael Roberts and

0:32.4

after more than two decades of working here, I do lots of outsidey stuff and none of it

0:38.3

is all that sketchy. Same goes for most of my colleagues and our contributors. I mean,

0:44.3

your standard fare biking and trail running and skiing and whatnot, it isn't super risky.

0:49.5

Of course, the risk factors do scale up dramatically when you're talking about pursuits

0:54.8

like big waves surfing or high altitude mountaineering or base jumping or mushroom foraging,

1:01.8

which brings us to this week's episode and also last week's episode. You see, last week

1:07.7

we did a piece on the rather bizarre world of truffle hunters, those secretive characters

1:13.4

who search forests for delicious underground fungi that can be worth thousands of dollars

1:18.4

a pound. And while we were working on that story and after it came out, people asked

1:23.8

me, wait, isn't that dangerous? Can't you get poisoned? The answer is no. True truffles

1:31.5

as far as we know are safe. But, and this is important, some mushrooms look like truffles

1:38.9

and they absolutely can be dangerous. When I explained this, people said, you should

1:44.9

do a story on mushroom foraging and how easy it is to eat the wrong thing. Well, we've

1:51.3

actually done that already, way back in 2017, and it's one of my favorite episodes ever,

1:58.4

so we're going to replay it today. But before we start, be prepared. In this piece,

2:04.3

we put you, the listener, in a very uncomfortable survival scenario so that you can feel just

2:10.7

how scary that would be. You weren't looking for trouble when you left

2:21.4

the house today. It's a warm autumn morning and there's a fresh, earthy smell in the air
