Summary

Most teaching on this gift goes one direction: detect the demon, cast it out, move on. But what if that's only a fraction of what Paul actually meant? In 1 Corinthians 12:10, Paul lists the gift of discernment of spirits and says nothing else. The silence has fueled real debate, and in this episode Michael Rowntree walks through the three most serious scholarly positions and tells you where he lands. Michael examines the Source Testing View (held by Wayne Grudem and D.A. Carson), the ...

Have you ever read the Gospels and thought to yourself, man, Jesus and the disciples cast out demons consistently? Why is it that no one actually teaches us how to do that? And I don't think it's a fringe question. People in my experience, man, they're reading their scriptures and they're saying, man, I see exorcism in the Bible. But I genuinely don't know what to do if someone in front of me was demonized. This is why we developed the Introduction to Deliverance Ministry course. And an important announcement on that, the pre-sales for that course are available until May 1st. So that early bird discount is going to expire come May 1st. If you're interested in taking your next steps into spiritual warfare, encourage you to check out the remnant radio.com. Go look at the course tab, find the deliverance ministry course,

to deliverance ministry. Welcome to the wonderful world of Remnant Radio. My name is Michael

Roundtree, and today we're going to try to answer the question, what is the spiritual gift

0:50.9

of discernment of spirits.

1:00.1

Paul lists this gift in 1 Corinthians chapter 12, but he doesn't define it, hence the debate.

1:03.6

And there's a lot of debate over this very gift.

1:08.7

So we can't take a very dogmatic position because he doesn't define it, but I'm going to evaluate three views.

1:11.2

And I've defined these views like this, the source testing view, number one, number two, the prophecy weighing view, and number three, the prophecy

1:16.7

interpreting view. And so we're going to walk through those three different views on the gift

1:22.3

of discernment of spirits. But before we walk through those, I want to read the passage that

1:26.9

contains this gift. It appears in 1st Corinthians 1210, I want to read the passage that contains this gift.

1:28.3

It appears in 1 Corinthians 1210, but let's read the fuller context starting in verse 7. Paul writes, but to each one is given the manifestation of the spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom to the spirit and to another the word of knowledge according to the same spirit, To another faith by the same spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one spirit, and to another, the affecting

1:47.1

of miracles, to another prophecy, to another, the distinguishing of spirits.

1:52.5

There's the gift.

1:53.4

To another various kinds of tongues and to another interpretation of tongues, but one in the

1:57.1

same spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as he

2:01.9

will. So some will interpret discernment of spirits, some distinguishing of spirits, some distinguishing

2:06.2

between spirits. If we were to look at it literally, it's actually a double plural. It's discernings

2:12.8

of spirits. And that's going to come into play later so you can put a pin in that, the double

2:19.1

plural, we'll come back to it. But now let's dive into the three different views. I said we'd

2:23.7

first cover the source detecting view. This is a view held by Wayne Grudom in D.A. Carson,
