| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the For the Gospel Podcast. My name is Kosti Hin and I am your host. For the |
| 0:15.6 | gospel is all about providing sound doctrine for everyday people. And on this episode, I want |
| 0:21.9 | to talk to you about the doctrine of the atonement. The idea of atonement is one that is thrown |
| 0:27.7 | around a lot today in church circles and maybe you're new to church or new to Christianity or you've |
| 0:32.0 | been a professing Christian for a long time. You've probably heard the atonement in an Easter |
| 0:38.0 | sermon or a good Friday sermon in relation to Christ dying on the cross. But there's a lot of |
| 0:42.3 | confusion as well about the atonement. Some people will say, Jesus died for your sins and you receive |
| 0:47.5 | salvation by faith, which is true. They'll also say, hey, he didn't just pay for your sin, |
| 0:53.9 | he paid for your sickness. He atoned for that cancer. He atoned for your poverty and you can |
| 1:00.6 | receive healing and you could receive riches if you just believe by faith as well. And the atonement |
| 1:06.3 | gets stamped on a lot of things. Now, there are some truths that we want to talk about in relation |
| 1:10.8 | to healing and in relation to the blessings of God through the atonement. And we'll get to those |
| 1:15.4 | shortly. But I think it's important for us to understand what the idea of atonement is all about. |
| 1:22.3 | I want to read you a passage where we see the atonement very clear in scripture. It's first John |
| 1:27.3 | chapter 2 verses 1 and 2. John writes, my little children, I'm writing these things to you |
| 1:33.6 | so that you don't sin. And if anyone sins, because he knows that people are going to sin, |
| 1:38.8 | we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. And then he calls Jesus |
| 1:43.6 | something in verse 2. He himself, first John 2 verse 2, is the propitiation for our sins, |
| 1:51.3 | not only for ours only, but also those of the whole world or the cosmos. And basically, |
| 1:56.8 | what John is saying is that Jesus is the atonement, the propitiation. That's what the Greek word |
| 2:03.5 | is translated as atonement. And the word defines that which appeases anger. If you look up the word |
| 2:11.7 | atonement, it means that there has been an act which has brought about reconciliation with someone |
