In Buddhism, basically the first teachings of Buddha are said to be the for noble truths and those in a nutshell are that life is suffering and by suffering, it doesn't mean torture. It just basically means unpleasantness and a feeling of dissatisfaction, etc.

2:33.0

The second noble truth is that the cause of your suffering is craving and ignorance. The third one is that there is a way to free yourself from that suffering.

2:46.0

And the fourth one essentially states that the way to free yourself from a life of suffering is the follow what is called the noble eightfold path.

2:56.0

Now the noble eightfold path is a great basically great list of moral practices. They contain right view, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood. All of the right aspects are basically just qualifying that each of those topics are participated in a moral thoughtful and ethical type of way.

3:24.0

It doesn't do any harm to yourself or others. So whatever you say right livelihood, it means that what you do for a job is wholesome in some way is not selling people poison or taking advantage of people or something like that.

3:40.0

And so do the question about right speech, right speech essentially means not talking trash about anyone, not trying to plot other people against other people, not being manipulative, not lying, not being abusive in any way.

3:59.0

And one of my favorites is not talking just for the sake of talking. Now each of those things are really valuable. And if you experiment with right speech, not connected to any type of religiosity, any type of Buddhism or anything I take all the Buddhism and all that away from it, just look at it as a concept of mindful practice and mindful awareness.

4:28.0

Watch how it changes your life. If you really try and stick with right speech, it's very fascinating. I've gone through this experiment and really enjoyed what it taught me about how I communicate with the world and how other people communicate with me.

4:47.0

Essentially, you would use a level of your awareness in any moment that you're speaking to not only be paying attention to who you're speaking with and what you're saying, but also if what you're saying, like the contents of what you're saying and also where that language is coming from within you, what your motivations are in saying those things.

5:12.0

Are those things kind, compassionate, wholesome, constructive, or are they critical, abusive, divisive, or judgmental in some type of way?

5:27.0

And what's interesting is that if you run this experiment and just pay attention to the way that you're talking throughout the day, and it doesn't matter what you're talking about, if you're talking about something really boring, whatever, it makes it quite easy to not practice wrong speech.

5:45.0

However, if you're hanging out with a friend and you're in a zone and you start talking about mutual friends or people out there in the world or various things can be easy to, because it's kind of a social construct to kind of talk negatively about people or things sometimes, it's easy to slide into that zone without really realizing it.

6:08.0

Also, if someone asks you're opinion on something, it can be surprising if you're paying attention how critical and judgmental you are without really giving whatever the thing that you're talking about, a little bit more of an opportunity to exist on its own terms, as opposed to really crushing it with your own judgment.
