My name is Jenna, and this is Smarter News, news when it matters and why it matters.

Our Smarter series features unique people who help us think and live smarter. The epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in America right now

is New York City, and a lot of attention is focused on Queens, where currently most of

the cases are being reported. Queens is a densely populated area of more than 2 million people,

making it twice the size of San Francisco. It's also one of the most diverse places in the entire

world, a fascinating place full of incredible stories and people and food

and culture. I learned this as my first reporting assignments in New York City brought me there,

and I later lived in a neighborhood called Long Island City. That's where I met Patrick Thompson.

He pastors a church in the area that my husband and I would frequently attend, and last week,

Patrick sent me a text letting me know he had started a community effort in light of COVID-19,

and, oh, by the way, he was sick with the disease. We planned to do an interview, but then he couldn't.
